Alana Burns
Alana.
Alana has been a friend of mine for a few years now, 2016? When we met were both in a very different place than we are right now. Besides being a therapist, her main occupation, I remember she was doing art direction, working a crazy schedule and I was working a 9 to 5 job at that time. When I finally was brave enough to quit and start Revés she invited me to help with her art direction projects. It was a new experience for me and I really needed that back then, I’m super grateful to her for that.
Fastforward a few years, Alana is now making art and jewelry. Her love for light and candles culminated in beautiful paintings that seem to come from pure intuition, a dance of melted wax over cotton canvas. Her jewelry line La Mar are more than jewels, they are treasures she stumbles upon when she’s close to the sea.
Alana bought the very first Revés I officialy made to the public. A white 002.
How did you discover candles as a medium?
I live surrounded by candle light and big pillar candles at home.
I love the wax and its shapes, this inspired my need to register it, something that led to explore the universes I could built with wax.
What has been your biggest challenge when making jewelry with shells?
Understanding how fragile they are and respect that.
Has your process changed since you started?
Getting to know the materials and walking side by side with them has taken me to different places than the one I started in.
Who has been your biggest influence?
I think we are all always stimulated and constantly inspired, I wouldn’t say is one thing or a person particularly.
In a few words, a day in your life.
Everyday is different.
Everyday we wake up different.
Today my day had a slower rythm, I slept more and I needed coffee to start, I’m letting it flow. I went to my studio and prepared a canvas, I picked a color palette, now I’m heading to a candle factory.
